Rotary Rewind – October 3, 2018
If you didn’t make it to this week’s Rotary Club of Forest Grove meeting, here is what you missed…
Wednesday’s Program: ShelterBox Update- Jeannine Murrell
Rotarian Jeannine Murrell delivered an engaging talk about ShelterBox and the role it plays in helping displaced individuals.
Currently 85 million people are displaced and homeless due to natural disaster or human created disaster. By 2050 it is projected that there will be over 200 million people displaced due to disaster. In 2017, Shelter Box responded in 21 countries, both natural and man-made, providing shelter aid to 160,000 people.
Over the last 18 years ShelterBox has served over 1.2 million displaced persons with a mission to assist 1 million people a year with ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits.
Shelter Box is a nonprofit, or NGO, founded in Cornwall, UK in 2000 and continues to operate out of that region with a US Affiliate headquarter located in Sarasota, FL. In 2012, ShelterBox became Rotary International’s first Project Partner and remains the only disaster relief charity. Shelter Box’s partners in the field include: United Nations Human Refugee Council (UNHRC) International Red Cross (IFRC), International Organization for Migration, Handicap International, PLAN, and Habitat for Humanity.
Shelter Box focuses on remote, isolated, and often the hardest hit communities and aims to serve vulnerable populations. The equipment offering for shelter aid includes: ShelterBoxes, ShelterBox Standard Relief Tents, United Nations Tents, ShelterKits, and Tarps.
Shelter Box is a volunteer driven organization (1,000 volunteers) with fewer than 120 paid professional staff. Because of this high level of volunteer support, they distribute more that 85 cents out of each dollar to the beneficiary and received Charity Navigator’s highest rating for fiduciary responsibility and transparency.
If you would like to make a donation to ShelterBox USA please go to https://www.shelterboxusa.org/
Thank you to Forest Grove Rotarians, who raised $343 to donate to ShelterBox USA at the meeting. We will have another ask for funds to benefit ShelterBox at next Wednesday’s meeting.
