Rotary Rewind – Nov. 7, 2018
If you didn’t make it to this week’s Rotary Club of Forest Grove meeting, below is an overview of what you missed.
Announcements
Crab Feed – Save The Date!:Mark your calendars for our annual Crab Feed, which will take place on Wed., Mar. 27 at the Forest Grove Senior Center. This will be an evening dinner, so no noon club meeting that day. More details to come as we get closer to the date.
Hope for the Holidays: We are now collecting funds to assist local families for our annual Hope for the Holidays service project. Thank you to those of you who pledged this last Wednesday. We will also collect funds and pledges at our noon meetings on Wed., Nov. and Wed., Nov. 28 (no meeting on Wed., Nov. 21). You can also give donations directly or by credit card through Ken Cunningham. Help our club make the holiday season just a little bit brighter for local needy families!
Satellite Club Fundraiser: Watch for more details soon on a fundraiser that the Satellite Club is doing over the next month. They will be selling holiday centerpieces.
Rotary Foundation Update: To date, club members have contributed a total of $2,500 towards The Rotary Foundation and $845 towards PolioPlus. We have a good start on reaching our club goals of $9,000 for TRF giving and $1,500 towards PolioPlus giving. Thank you!
Be The Inspiration: This week’s Be The Inspiration Award recipient is Janet Peters, as selected by Michelle Thomas. Congratulations Michelle!
Holiday Parade: Plans are in the works for our Rotary float for the Forest Grove Holiday Light Parade, which will be on Sat., Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. Make plans to not only march in the parade, but to help put the float together. Details forthcoming on float work party days and times!
Rotaract Service Project: The Pacific University Rotaract Club will be doing a tree-planting with Friends of Trees on Sat., Nov. 17. The group will meet that morning at 8 a.m. in the parking lot between McCormick and Walter halls on the Pacific campus and carpool to the planting site. For more information to help out, please contact Rotaract president Karen Awa.
Wednesday’s Program: Tom Marcos, Rotary Foundation
It was our pleasure to welcome PDG Tom Marcos, who is the Rotary Foundation chair for District 5100, to help kick off Rotary Foundation Month. Tom talked to us about what the foundation does both locally and internationally. He explained some about how foundation giving works and how giving ultimately affects local club. “There is no other charity,” he said, “where I can give money and then help decide where that money goes.”
Our club’s giving to The Rotary Foundation directly affects the amount of grant funding our club can receive. When we meet our Annual Fund giving goal (which is $9,000, or $100 for every member we had as of July 1), we are able to receive 1:1 funding on grants. When we do not meet our giving goals, we can only receive 50 percent.
Over the last three years, our club has used a District Grant to help fund out Hope for the Holidays service project. We are doing that again in 2018.
As part of Rotary Foundation Month, President Blake offered 100 Rotary Foundation points (towards your first or next Paul Harris Fellow) to the first 10 members to sign up to give to the foundation through Rotary Direct. Flyers for signing up are available at noon meetings. You can also sign up at rotary.org/donate. President Blake must see proof of signing up for Rotary Direct to receive the foundation points.
