Mike Ward Community Service Award: Nominations are now open for the club’s Mike Ward Community Service Award, which will be presented at the Crab Feed on Wed., Mar. 27. The award honors a non-Rotarian who has demonstrated longtime service to the community. Nomination forms can be picked up at a club meeting or can be Downloaded From The Club Website. The deadline for nominations is Fri., Mar. 1.

NAMS Painting Project: We finally have plans in place to move forward with a painting project in the hallways of Neil Armstrong Middle School! The current plan is to prep work on the project area on the afternoon/evening of Fri., Mar. 8, with painting taking place on Sat., Mar. 9. We will circulate a sign-up sheet for volunteers at the noon meeting each of the next two Wednesdays. If you will not be around to sign up and want to participate, contact Community Service Committee chair Bryce Baker, baker.w.bryce@gmail.com. Thank you to Bryce, Claudia Yakos and Rudy Tinoco for their work in bringing this project together.

Tree Planting Service Opportunity: The Forest Grove Daybreak has put together a tree plating service project and is inviting members of our club to take part. The planting at Metro’s Chehalem Ridge Nature Area will take place either on Sun., Mar. 3 or on Sat., Mar. 9. In you are interested in taking part, please contact Mitch Taylor with the Daybreak Club, mitchtaylor4@gmail.com.

Welcome Michael Colvin: We proud to induct our newest member of the club on Wednesday. Michael Colvin and his wife, Susan, are new to the Forest Grove area. Michael is retired and has had a varied and interesting professional history, with careers as a teacher, broadcaster and pastor to name a few. Michael is very interested in amateur radio and emergency preparedness. Michael is sponsored by John Ball. Welcome to Rotary, Michael!

Peace Village: Our club and the Forest Grove Rotary Daybreak Club have both received District 5100 Matching Grants to help towards our club’s joint Peace Village project. The camp, which will target middle school students in teaching skills in conflict resolution, media literacy, connections with nature and mindfulness, will take place in August. The project is a joint between our Rotary Club and the Forest Grove Daybreak Rotary Club. Rotary Foundation Update: To date, club members have contributed a total of $4,520 towards The Rotary Foundation and $1,464 towards PolioPlus. We are a third of the way towards reaching our club goals of $9,000 for TRF giving and $1,500 towards PolioPlus giving. Thank you!

Silent Auction at Crab Feed: In order to help raise funds for our Rotary Foundation giving, we will have a silent auction as part of the Crab Feed on Wed., Mar. 27. If you have a great item (think beach house weekend, experience, cool item, etc.) that you would be willing to donate, please contact Michelle Thomas, michelle.thomas@fgiis.com.

Are You Close To A Paul Harris?: We will be honoring our latest Paul Harris Fellow recipients at the Crab Feed on Wed., Mar. 27. Are you close to your first or next Paul Harris? Be The Inspiration Award: This week’s Be The Inspiration Award winner is Carl Heisler, as chosen and presented by Mike Hundley. Congratulations Carl!

Have A Program Idea?: We have made the transition for program chairs with Julia Kollar starting her term. If you have an idea for a program or would like to present something yourself, let Julia know. She will also have a program planning board at meetings so you can see what is on deck and what dates may be available.

Wednesday’s Program: Jim Crisp & Mike Hundley, Mike Ward
With nominations closing soon for the Mike Ward Community Service Award, Rotarians Jim Crisp and Mike Hundley presented a program on the life and legacy of Mike Ward. A longtime member of the Rotary Club of Forest Grove, Mike and his family moved to Forest Grove in the 1990s after he took a job with Intel. Prior to Intel, Mike has been employed in the aerospace and nuclear industries and had worked on such projects as the Titan 3 rocket and the Vikings Mars Lander.

Not long after moving to Forest Grove, Mike was diagnosed with ALS. He did not allow the disease to slow him down, continuing to work at Intel and doing lots of a traveling in a specially-outfitted RV once he was confined to a wheelchair. Despite his limitations, Mike attended Rotary every week possible was a very visible member of the community. You Can Read More Of Mike’s Amazing Life Story Here.

Upon Mike’s death in 2005, the club created the Mike Ward Community Service to honor a non-Rotarian who has provided outstanding service to the community. We will award this honor at the Crab Feed on Wed., Mar. 27.
