If you didn’t make it to this week’s Rotary Club of Forest Grove meeting, here is what you missed.
Club Announcements
Troop 213 Update: The Foundation Board has elected to donate $2,000 to our Scouts BSA Troop 213. This donation is specifically targeted to help fund a troop “Out of Council” camping trip next summer to Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island, California. The funds offsets a decrease in funding that the Scouts have received in the past from their Christmas tree lot, which has not been able to happen for the last two years. The Scouts will be doing additional fundraising to help make their goal to make this trip possible.
Western Washington County Shower Trailer Project: On August 28, our club received a presentation from Community Connection West about a shower trailer that the organization is building to serve the homeless in Western Washington County. The Foundation Board voted to provide a $2,000 donation towards the completion of funding for the project. We are excited to help assist this project and for what it will provide for the homeless in our part of the county.
Blue Badges Have Been Earned!: Congratulations to the new four Rotarians who have completed the process of moving from their red badge to their blue badge: Court Carrier, Michael Colvin, David Parker and Chris Barron.
Satellite Club Update: Thank you to everyone who attended our September Satellite Club “Thirsty Thursday” meeting at McMenamins Grand Lodge. We had a great turnout with around 80 percent of Satellite Club members in attendance. Our Satellite members were given the opportunity to view committee assignments and options for service. Stay tuned for details on a fundraising Daddy-Daughter Dance, which is in the planning phases!
The next Thirsty Thursday is scheduled for Thursday, October 17. The time and location will be announced soon.
Rotaract Club Update: The Pacific University Rotaract Club had 17 members participate in their own road clean-up event on Saturday, Sept. 28. The club also planned to have members present at the Rotary Club road clean-up, which was this last Saturday. The Rotaract Club’s new member induction is scheduled for this Thursday, October 10, at 7 p.m. in the multi-purpose room in the University Center at Pacific University. The club is expecting 20 new members during that induction.
Coming Soon…New Road Signs: With the assistance of a District 5100 Public Image Grant and the Daybreak club, we have purchased new road signs to go up in the McDougall Garden. The white signs promote the club with the new Rotary word mark branding and promote the meeting time and places for both Forest Grove clubs.
Have A Program Idea?: If you have an idea for a program or would like to present something yourself, let our program chair, Julia Kollar, know. She will also have a program planning board at meetings so you can see what is on deck and what dates may be available.
Next Week’s Duty Roster: Make note of your assignment!

District Announcements
World Polio Day: World Polio Day is coming up on Thursday, Oct. 24. Since 1988, we’ve seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than two years we’ve seen wild polio cases in only two countries. Afghanistan and Pakistan. For more information on how Rotary is making a difference, please visit: https://www.endpolio.org/
Last Week’s Program: Howard Sullivan, Peace Village Forest Grove
Rotarian Howard Sullivan presented last week’s program on the Peace Village camp that our club and Forest Grove Daybreak Club co-sponsored here in Forest Grove the week of August 13-16. Working in conjunction with United Church of Christ and Pacific University, 12 middle school students came together to take part in the camp.
Basing Peace Village out of the United Church of Christ, these students were presented material on Conflict Resolution, Mindfulness, and Connection to Nature and Media Literacy. The four tenets of camp were emphasized one for each day.
Tuesday – Conflict Resolution
Wednesday – Mindfulness
Thursday – Connection to Nature pt. 1
Friday – Media Literacy and Connection to Nature pt. 2
Each of the days started with a lesson dealing with the daily tenet-see above. Then the students were directed to apply the lessons of the morning sessions through journaling, co-operative activities such as building planter boxes for Habitat for Humanity or creating a working musical organ. Each day the students were also engaged in drama recreations emphasizing the daily tenet. Although we only had 12 students, the week went well with the students expressing their desire to come back next year and be a part of year two.
