Club Announcements
Road Cleanup:Thank you to the 18 Rotarians and nine Rotaractors that took part in the semi-annual road clean-up on Gales Creek Road and Thatcher Road. According to Jerry Hoerber, that ties a record for the number of people participating! Thank you Jerry and to Andrea Stewart for their work coordinating the project.

Rotaract Update: Thank you to our members who came out to support the Pacific University Rotaract Club for their fall new member induction ceremony. And welcome to the new members who will make a difference as part of Rotaract!

Concours d’Elegance Update: Court Carrier presented to the club on some of the ideas about trying to expand activities around the Concours weekend in an effect to bring more people to town from a tourism perspective. He is looking for individuals interested in helping develop and initiate activities that will complement Concours, but not conflict from the event, which is our largest fundraising activity. If you have ideas, or are interested in being part of a committee, please contact Court.

Troop 213 Update: The Foundation Board has elected to donate $2,000 to our Scouts BSA Troop 213. This donation is specifically targeted to help fund a troop “Out of Council” camping trip next summer to Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island, California. The funds offsets a decrease in funding that the Scouts have received in the past from their Christmas tree lot, which has not been able to happen for the last two years. The Scouts will be doing additional fundraising to help make their goal to make this trip possible.

Western Washington County Shower Trailer Project: On August 28, our club received a presentation from Community Connection West about a shower trailer that the organization is building to serve the homeless in Western Washington County. The Foundation Board voted to provide a $2,000 donation towards the completion of funding for the project. We are excited to help assist this project and for what it will provide for the homeless in our part of the county.

 Satellite Club Update: The next Thirsty Thursday is scheduled for this Thursday, October 17, 6:30 p.m., at The Growler Garage, 1837 Pacific Ave.

Coming Soon…New Road Signs: With the assistance of a District 5100 Public Image Grant and the Daybreak club, we have purchased new road signs to go up in the McDougall Garden. The white signs promote the club with the new Rotary word mark branding and promote the meeting time and places for both Forest Grove clubs.

 Have A Program Idea?: If you have an idea for a program or would like to present something yourself, let our program chair, Julia Kollar, know. She will also have a program planning board at meetings so you can see what is on deck and what dates may be available.

District Announcements
World Polio Day: World Polio Day is coming up on Thursday, Oct. 24.  Since 1988, we’ve seen a worldwide reduction in polio cases of 99.9%. For more than two years we’ve seen wild polio cases in only two countries. Afghanistan and Pakistan. Membership Summit: District 5100 will be holding a Membership Summit on Sat., Nov. 9, at Pacific University. The summit is designed to help clubs draw more members into the world of Rotary. Cost will be $40 per person and will include a continental breakfast and lunch. Registration will be open soon on DacDB. For more information, contact Claudia Yakos.

Rotary Foundation: For the 12th year in a row, The Rotary Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator. The four-star rating is recognition for demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations that Charity Navigator evaluates have received 12 consecutive four-star evaluations.

Last Week’s Program: Janie Schutz, Forest Grove Police Department
Janie Schutz chief of the Forest Grove Police Department and immediate past president of the Forest Grove Daybreak Rotary Club, along with city administrator Paul Downey and FGPD community outreach specialist Lauren Quinsland, presented to the club about the need and plans for a new police station in Forest Grove.

The current police station, on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Ash Street, was built in 1978. Since then, the department has doubled in size and the population of Forest Grove has increased from 11,000 to 25,000. The current space is no longer adequate for records & evidence storage. There is only one room for interviews. There is no place for holding juvenile offenders safely. The patrol and lobby are both inadequate for the increase in department size.

The city would like to build a new police station on land already owned by the city on the corner of 19th Avenue and Birch Street. The cost of the new structure will be between $18 and $20 million. The city plans to put a general obligation bond proposal in front of voters sometime in the next two years. It would cost more to either remodel the current police station or to demolish the current building and build on the current site.

An open house to discuss the proposed new police station will take place on November 21 at the Community Auditorium. To learn more about the project, go online to www.forestgrove-or.gov/station.
